“I don’t just do my job from my office, I actually engage with my clients and try to bring out the best in them.”

Ellie Sellars, from the Secwépemc Nation, is a dedicated Native Courtworker, who shares her experiences at the 3rd Annual BC First Nations Justice Forum, where they lifted up the crucial role of cultural integration and community support in the justice system. Reflecting on her background and challenges, including the impact of overdose on Kin (clients,) Ellie emphasizes her commitment to healing and building rapport through family connections. Her insights bring attention to the vital need for cultural understanding and community care in supporting Indigenous Kin (clients,) proving how essential the roles of Native Courtworkers are in informing justice while caretaking the well-being of those impacted by the justice system.
